My initial interest in creating This is the Last came from my passion for making a change in a world so heavily impacted by rape culture. For many years I went through the world with no real understanding of what rape culture was, what it looked like, and how it could affect me. I was completely oblivious to the fact that it was something that had been affecting me and would continue to affect me. As soon as I began to educate myself on issues of rape culture and sexual violence, I started to reflect on how I had seen in my own life, and it felt like all of a sudden I saw it in everything: advertisements, everyday conversation, the media, movies, television, and everything in between. I quickly became infuriated by the lack of discussion surrounding the subject. I started to learn that one of the most effective ways to combat rape culture and gender-based violence was to start conversations, educate myself, and educate others. I am often asked why I am so passionate about this and that is a question I have struggled with for a long time; there was no moment where something clicked, and I knew I needed to enact change. Since I became passionate about the subject, it was never a question of if I wanted to be an activist and advocate, I don’t have a choice. I don’t see how someone could have a conversation, learn the statistics, and not become as infuriated as I was about things happening right in front of us. I want This Is The Last to be a place where conversations start , where you can educate yourself, and to be an outlet for people to become more involved. All of which are crucial aspects of combating rape culture and sexual violence.
